PBS has also aired two programs about Julia: an American Masters biography and Julia Child Memories: Bon Appétit, a retrospective of some of the most memorable episodes of The French Chef. In 1998, at age 85, she returned to demonstrating cooking basics in her own kitchen with her final series, Julia Child & Jacques Pépin: Cooking at Home. Julia's subsequent cooking shows for public television, which include Julia Child & Company, Julia Child & More Company, Dinner at Julia’s, and Julia Child Cooking with Master Chefs, have been aired and repeated without interruption ever since. (WGBH has built on that 1972 milestone with many other media access advances for the 36 million Americans with hearing or vision loss.) That same year, the Childs returned to the US, settling in Cambridge, Massachusetts.Īmong the other breakthroughs for which the series can be credited, it was on The French Chef that WGBH first introduced captions for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing. The three women also ran a cooking school in Paris, L’Ecole des Trois Gourmandes (the school of the three hearty eaters). Along with two French friends, Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, she co-wrote Mastering the Art of French Cooking, published in 1961, which aimed to make French cooking accessible to Americans. While in Paris with her husband, Julia enrolled at le Cordon Bleu, where she attended French cooking classes. Paul joined the United States Information Agency and was assigned to the US Embassy in Paris in 1949. She married her husband, Paul Child, in 1946. She was born Julia McWilliams in Pasadena, California, on Aug. More than a decade after her death, Julia Child continues to captivate the public's imagination. Overall an enjoyable dish – go see this movie with your mom, your sister, or your best friend. In 1963, a charismatic woman with a passion for French cuisine and an inimitable voice stepped in front of the cameras at WGBH and introduced Americans to the art of French cooking. The movie dragged a bit, with a running time of just over 2 hours – I thought some scenes could have been trimmed down a bit. There was quite a bit of passion in this film – passion (romantic and non-romantic) for each other and passion for food. It was adorable to see two grown women squealing like little girls because they are so excited to see each other. One of my favorite scenes in the movie was when Julia's sister Dorothy (Jane Lynch) comes to Paris to visit her. I enjoyed seeing the delicious meals both Julia and Julie prepared, especially boeuf bourguignon (YUM!!!). Seriously, if someone was going to be cooking me delicious food for a year, I would be 100% encouraging them along every step of the way!! Julia and Paul had a beautiful residence (with a maid!!), while Julie and Eric lived in a tiny apartment. Julia's husband Paul (Stanley Tucci) was extremely encouraging of Julia's cooking, while Julie's husband was kind of a jerk!! He was not very supportive of Julie's project. They had similar experiences, yet there were drastic differences. I liked the parallel stories of Julia and Julie. At first, no one is interested, but as time goes by, Julie gets more and more followers of her blog. One evening, while bemoaning the lack of meaning in her life, Julie picks up Julia Child's cookbook and decides to cook all 524 recipes in the book in a year, while blogging about her experience. Of course, we all know who Julia Child is!! Meryl Streep was a fantastic Julia Child, who started out as a bored housewife in Paris looking to fill her time and ended up being a major influence on American cuisine. All of her friends are successful in their careers. She, her husband Eric (Chris Messina) and their cat live in an apartment above a pizza parlor. Julie (Amy Adams) is a government employee working in New York City in the year following 9/11. "Julie & Julia" is based on the book by the same name, which is based on the true story by Julie Powell about "The Julie & Julia Project".

However, your ability to edit your screencast is very limited. With Screencast-o-Matic, you don't need to download or install any program. Screencast-O-Maticįor fairly basic screencasts that include full motion (for example, a video clip or the movement of your cursor) then you could use an online platform such as Screencast-o-Matic. In this video, UWaterloo instructor Christiane Lemieux explains how she uses iMovie to make video lectures for her courses. IMovie is a simple, easy to use video editing program that comes free with the Apple operating system (it has no Windows PC version). You can then share it as a PowerPoint file (your audience will need to download it and then open it in PowerPoint) or you can convert your narrated PowePoint into video. If your screencast only needs to include still images (not full motion), then you could make a PowerPoint presentation and then turn it into a narrated PowerPoint (see, for example, Creating a Narrated PowerPoint). Will making the screencast save you time later on? For example, will it mean that you don’t need to explain something many times to many people? Select the right screencasting tool for your needs Narrated PowerPoint Making a screencast takes a fair bit of time (a seven-minute screencast, if it requires editing or other enhancements, could take a couple hours to make). If you only need to make a couple screencasts, it might not be worth the time it takes to set up and learn how to use a screencasting tool. Other kinds of content - such as an explanation of the parts of the atom - works well as a screencast, as this Khan Academy screencast, Introduction to the Atom, demonstrates. Is the content you want to share suitable for a screencast? Some content, such as a discussion of a policy, is probably better presented in document form than in a screencast. Will they benefit more from a screencast than if you delivered the content in class? Will your screencast especially benefit certain students?Īlso consider the appropriateness of the content. When thinking about implementing screencasts in your teaching, ask yourself how your students will benefit from your screencasts. Getting startedīefore sitting down to create your first screencast, it’s important to evaluate whether or not screencasts are the right fit for you and your students’ needs and to select a screencast tool will work best for you. Screencasts can also benefit students whose first language is not English (they can watch the screencast multiple times, and you can include captions with your screencast), and for students with certain learning disabilities. They can review them prior to final examinations. They can watch screencasts multiple times. Screencasts allow students to access the content from any location and whenever they need it. Instead of covering this remedial content in class, it is delivered via a screencast that is accessed by those students who need it. For example, the instructor of a history course might find that many of their students don't know how to properly reference sources. Instead, you could create a screencast that explained the solutions, which your students could watch (and re-watch) at their convenience. Using screencasts in this way can also help students catch up on remedial content. For example, after giving your students a test, you might not want to spend an hour going over the test questions to explain the correct solutions. Screencasts also allow instructors to deliver course content that they don't want to cover during class. Screencasts can allow you to deliver content outside of class, which means that class time can be spent on more productive and interactive learning activities. The benefits of screencasts Free up class time Screencasts can be enhanced with the inclusion of "call outs" (such as arrows or circles that emphasize certain parts of the screen image) or title cards (which are slides with text that introduce a new section of the screencast). Unlike a video recording of a classroom lecture, in a screencast the person giving the lecture is not the primary visual focus - rather, their presentation material is the primary visual focus.Ī screencast can comprise anything from still images (for example, slides containing text or photographs) to full motion (for example, the movement of your mouse cursor, drawing or writing on slide, video clips from lab demonstrations, and so on). Why doesn't Power BI do the same when importing the data?ĮDIT: A colleague of mine has noticed similar issues in Excel, so it doesn't appear to be just a Power BI issue. DBeaver correctly handles all of these methods. PostgreSQL: DATEPART(day,date2 - date1) MySQL: DATEDIFF(date1,date2). Flooring the date (date_trunc method) returns the raw value, including the 8:00 PM time - Boo! These functions describe how to find the difference in days between two dates. Casting the date value to a DATE rounds the date to 12:00:00 AM - Boo! Starting with Npgsql 6.0, these special values are mapped to the. The PostgreSQL logic to extract the month returns April, as if it's rounding up - Boo! NET types ( DateTime and DateOnly, NodaTime Instant and LocalDate). The raw date comes in correctly ( 8:00:00 PM) - Yay! However, in Power BI (using the Import method): Extracting the month value also gives me March. In DBeaver, the date matches user entry values in the front end application. From that date, I want to extract the month value, which would be "3", or "March". Lets say I have a date of " 20:00:00" (so 8pm on ). What I have written is : datediff minute, paymenttime, triggertime) < 15 I basically want the count of users who paid within 15 mins of the triggered time thus I have also done count (s.userid) as count However it returns count as 1 even in the above. In SQL Server, you can use DATEDIFF function to get the datetime difference in specified units. In SQL Server: Like we do in SQL Server its much easier. DATEDIFF Function - SQL Server to PostgreSQL Migration. The application sits on top of a PostgreSQL database, which I'm able to connect to Power BI. I am using the DATEDIFF function to calculate the difference between my two timestamps. Here I need to calculate the difference of the two dates in the PostgreSQL. We have a front-end client where our users enter dates in a datetime format. Home PostgreSQL Date Functions The following page shows the most commonly used PostgreSQL date functions that allow you to manipulate date and time values effectively. So theoretically, when you listen to tones that create a binaural beat, your brain activity and mental state begin synchronizing to it.īinaural beats are believed to have different effects depending on their frequency.ĭelta waves (1-4 Hz) - deep sleep, relaxation, unconsciousness. Researchers have found that different patterns and amounts of electrical activity (measured in Hertz) are linked with different mental states.įor instance, electrical activity in the brain between 1-4 Hz (the delta range) is associated with states of deep sleep. To understand binaural beat’s potential benefits for sleep, let’s do a quick refresh on brain waves.īrain waves are patterns of electricity created by activity in the brain. This is why so many people are excited about the potential of binaural beats - listening to them over time may make it easier to shift brain states! As you listen to binaural beats over time, experts believe that neurons begin firing and sending messages at the same rhythm as the binaural beat. Įssentially, when the brain hears different tones coming through each ear, it tries to integrate them into a single tone or beat. Research has found that our brains are able to perceive binaural beats when both tones are below 1000 Hz, and the difference between them is less than 35 Hz. These slightly different frequencies create a third tone within your mind, which is the binaural beat.įor example, if the tone in one ear is 10 Hertz (Hz), and the tone in your other ear is 30 Hz, the binaural beat would be 20 Hz. More specifically, they are the result of playing one tone at a specific frequency in your left ear, and another tone at a different frequency in your right ear. They do involve tones, but they’re actually an auditory illusion created within the brain. If you’ve been on a rollercoaster with insomnia for some time now, you’ve probably tried listening to relaxing music… But have you tried binaural beats?īinaural beats were discovered by physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839, but have only recently piqued the interest of insomniacs and biohackers alike for their potential benefits.īinaural beats aren’t exactly music. Aside from it being a frustrating experience, not getting enough sleep can have a huge impact on our health, wellbeing, relationships, and ability to perform at work. When you do manage to fall asleep, you’re not surprised to wake up just a few hours later. The longer you lay there trying to drift off, the more sleep evades you. You could be exhausted, practically falling asleep where you stand, and as soon as you lie in bed your mind begins whirring. As anyone who’s experienced insomnia knows, not being able to fall asleep can be an incredibly frustrating and demoralizing experience. The encounter drove Freddy to join the notorious gang La Sangra, and it didn't take long before he was a regular guest at LA County's juvenile detention facilities. Freddy was in awe, not just of the art, but of what it symbolized, and he wanted what this kid had: the potent sense of empowerment and belonging that came from joining a gang.
